Differentiated Reading Instruction. Purposeful and Intentional.

Many teachers find themselves going through the motions of implementing small group rotations for Reading. Because this type of instruction has so many components, it is common to end up with "busy work" or one-size-fits-all assignments that do not really give us the kind of data we need to drive instruction.
To ensure effective instruction through differentiated small group instruction, we must follow the assessment cycle. I know what you're thinking - more assessment? Can we please stop testing these kids and allow them to learn? Never fear! The assessment cycle does not have to involve long, arduous tests that drive you and your students equally nuts. The assessment cycle simply needs to include these three things: formative assessment, data analysis, and instruction modification. If these actions are taken continuously, student achievement will most certainly increase. In addition, the results of the formative assessment must be shared with students so that they are aware of what they have mastered, and where they need to focus their efforts.
